Root Canal Therapy

What is a root canal?

A root canal is one of the most common dental procedures performed, well over 14 million every year. This simple treatment can save your natural teeth and prevent the need of dental implants or bridges.

At the center of your tooth is pulp. Pulp is a collection of blood vessels that helps to build the surrounding tooth. Infection of the pulp can be caused by trauma to the tooth, deep decay, cracks and chips, or repeated dental procedures. Symptoms of the infection can be identified as visible injury or swelling of the tooth, sensitivity to temperature or pain in the tooth and gums.

If you experience any of these symptoms, your dentist will most likely recommend non-surgical treatment to eliminate the diseased pulp. This injured pulp is removed and the root canal system is thoroughly cleaned and sealed. This therapy usually involves local anesthesia and may be completed in one or more visits depending on the treatment required. Success for this type of treatment occurs in about 90% of cases. If your tooth is not amenable to endodontic treatment or the chance of success is unfavorable, you will be informed at the time of consultation or when a complication becomes evident during or after treatment. We use local anesthesia to eliminate discomfort. In addition, we will provide nitrous oxide analgesia, if indicated. You will be able to drive home after your treatment, and you probably will be comfortable returning to your normal routine.

What happens after treatment?

When your root canal therapy has been completed, a record of your treatment will be sent to your restorative dentist. You should contact their office for a follow-up restoration within a few weeks of completion at our office. Your restorative dentist will decide on what type of restoration is necessary to protect your tooth. It is rare for endodontic patients to experience complications after routine endodontic treatment or microsurgery. If a problem does occur, however, we are available at all times to respond. To prevent further decay, continue to practice good dental hygiene.

How much will it cost?

The cost associated with this procedure can vary depending on factors such as the severity of damage to the affected tooth and which tooth is affected. In general, endodontic treatment is much less expensive than tooth removal and replacement with an artificial tooth.

Melinda was my hero, she kept me calm throughout the entire procedure... When I'm in the dental chair, I'm 4 years old again and it's just not pretty, but Dr. Reynolds and Melinda put me right at ease and before I knew it, the root canal was finished. You guys are the BEST!

I highly recommend this practice to anyone that has a bit of fear with dental procedures. I have never had anything but fillings done at a dentist office, nothing like a root canal, and they made me feel comfortable and pretty much pain free. Very professional and nice.

This was my first root canal and I cant believe that I could have had a better experience anyplace. My health history required that I take an antibiotic, which I had not taken ,and Dr. Reynolds made sure that I had it before he stared the exam. He had my confidence right then and there. He and his staff were the most professional that I have known..Not one negative thing did I experience..I didn’t feel pain before or after the procedure. I would recommend this practice 100%!

Being a medical professional, I am keenly aware of essentials of superior medical care in competency of clinicians, licensure, credentialing, environmental/ infection control and standards of care. Simply put, it doesn't get any better than Dr. Reynolds and his fine staff. The environment is immaculate Zen-like with state-of-the-art equipment. The staff are responsive, caring and focused on your comfort. Dr. Reynolds has the unique combination of unsurpassed skills and personal warmth found rarely in today's medical arena. My desperate call was immediately returned by Cindy after-hours. Dr. Reynolds made it clear I had access to him at any time. The procedure was as painless and as fast as possible and most importantly, I awoke this morning without the dreaded daily cluster headache and enjoyed a cup of hot coffee without becoming unglued! Thank you so much!

The obvious statement: no one wants to get a root canal. I had already had the misfortune of having 3 root canals in my lifetime. This was to be my 4th. The unexpected statement: that was the best root canal ever! As Dr. Reynolds was treating my tooth, I was trying to think of the words to describe the work I could feel being done: words like thorough, deliberate, and meticulous. Leaving the office that day, I felt more than confident in the work of Dr. Reynolds. Also, and I can’t stress this strongly enough, at no time did Dr. Reynolds or his team even remotely make me feel that I, as the patient, was just next on the assembly line. Everyone in the office was genuinely helpful, kind, and empathetic. This was hugely important to me. May I never, ever need another root canal procedure in my lifetime, but if I do, I would go out of my way to see Dr. Reynolds.
